Teaching Through The Bible Effectively Using A Bible History Timeline
In our Sunday Bible group years ago, a woman who had been a Christian and been involved in the local Church for years, asserted that,"Yes, but Abraham had the Law and so he understood about......" (they weren't referring to the pre-Moses law) I wonder how many Christians would actually pick up the inaccuracy in this statement. Moses existed 500 years after Abraham and so it is not possible. I have since made up a Biblical timeline chart and explained more visually the time period of men and women and events.
Why is it that we get stuck in a rut of our favorite topics and sugar coated discourses?
We teach on a text from 2 Kings and a passage about John and a topic from the book of Nehemiah and then the example of Jamws or the fleece of Gideon - bits from here and all over, but we do not put it all at once in an apparent understandable, simple to remember, perspective with a good Bible TimeLine and Church History as well. Constantly we're bombarded with new books, modernist ideas, some of them hazardously edging toward Liberal thinking, when if we were to be instructed the basics of Church history, we then would not be so doomed to repeat it.
Let's us as tutors and preachers stitch together the fragments of the Bible and His plan into a seamless tapestry that our people can draw on for the remainder of their lives, to help them to figure out God, His Eternal Plan, the function of the Church and how to better interpret the Bible to order our lives by.
It is not difficult to do, and it is not boring if we're prepared to put in a bit of effort prayer and fervor, and just perhaps you can use a Bible Timeline also.
